Sleeper / Victims
Seit 1992 fotografiert Stephan Reusse für die Werkgruppe „Sleeper / Victims“ Schlafende im öffentlichen Raum sowie Opfer von Unfällen oder Gewalttaten. In den Wärmebildern treten individuelle Merkmale und räumliche Zusammenhänge zurück; die Körper erscheinen als diffuse, leuchtende Spuren. Die Arbeiten bewegen sich zwischen Dokument und Abstraktion, Präsenz und Verschwinden. Wärme wird zum Zeichen körperlicher Anwesenheit, zugleich aber auch zu etwas Flüchtigem. Die formale Nähe zwischen Schlafenden und „Victims“ erzeugt einen beunruhigenden Schwebezustand, in dem die konkrete Situation zunächst offenbleibt. So entziehen sich die Bilder der schnellen Lesbarkeit klassischer Reportagefotografie und stellen Fragen nach Sichtbarkeit, Schutzlosigkeit und danach, was von einer Person bleibt, wenn Identität und Geschichte im Bild kaum noch greifbar sind.
Since 1992, Stephan Reusse has been photographing people sleeping in public spaces as well as victims of accidents or acts of violence for his series “Sleeper / Victims.” In the thermal images, individual features and spatial contexts recede; the bodies appear as diffuse, luminous traces. The works move between document and abstraction, presence and disappearance. Heat becomes a sign of bodily presence, yet at the same time something fleeting. The formal proximity between sleepers and “victims” creates an unsettling state of suspension in which the actual situation initially remains unclear. In this way, the images resist the immediate legibility of conventional documentary photography and raise questions about visibility, vulnerability, and what remains of a person when identity and personal history are barely tangible in the image.
